John Stevenson MP for Carlisle has waded into discussions between Carlisle City Council and the Scottish Section of the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain regarding this year’s Carlisle Easter Fair.
The Showman’s Guild have raised concerns that this year’s event may not go ahead due to Carlisle City Council’s decision to increase the rent for the event.
In a letter to Jason Gooding, Chief Executive at Carlisle City Council, John said, ‘The Easter Fair is a well-loved event in Carlisle and there has been a great deal of disappointment that the event has not taken place since 2019 due to the pandemic and covid restrictions. I am also aware of the impact this has had on the showmen and their families over two very difficult years. I understand that negotiations are still underway between yourselves and the Showmen’s Guild, and I would like to encourage you to rethink this rent increase and do all you can to ensure this event take place.’
