Local MP John Stevenson has welcomed today’s announcements in the Queen’s Speech which sets out the Government’s ambitious agenda to make the United Kingdom stronger and more prosperous than before.
The speech included plans for investment in new green industries to create jobs whilst protecting the environment, more high quality vocational skills training to build a pathway for learners in to well paid jobs and investment to extend 5G mobile coverage and gigabit capable broadband.
John Stevenson said ‘I welcome the ambition of plans laid out in the Queen’s Speech today, which reaffirms the Government’s commitment to levelling up across the UK and strengthening economic ties as the country begins its recovery.
The ‘lifetime skills guarantee’ is particularly important to us here in Carlisle, recognising that people of all ages need to update their skills throughout their working lives in order to compete for new jobs available. We are lucky to have Carlisle College in the heart of our consistency. This is a great opportunity to raise aspirations for young people in Carlisle and look to the future. Carlisle has recently seen some fantastic investment from the Borderlands deal and the Town Fund. I want to ensure that this success continues and the levelling up agenda will certainly benefit our city.’
