More than 200 family business owners and parliamentarians attended a reception in Parliament yesterday to hear from the Business Secretary and celebrate the contribution of the UK family business sector.
The reception was hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Family Business, which is Chaired by John Stevenson MP.
Following the reception the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, the Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP said “I grew up above my family’s business, and I’ve seen for myself how such companies are a vital part not just of our country’s economic success but of the communities they do much to serve. They deserve the Government’s support, and they’re just the kind of business that will benefit from the Enterprise Bill that’s currently before Parliament.”
APPG for Family Business Chair John Stevenson MP said “Family businesses play a huge role in both our economy and their local communities. I am pleased that the Secretary of State recognises their contribution and as chair of the All Party Group for Family Business I am keen that family businesses continue to engage with Parliament and Government to ensure that there is legislation that specifically assists and recognises the contribution of family businesses throughout Britain.”
IFB Director General Mark Hastings said “I was great to see so many family business owners here in Parliament to hear from the Business Secretary and to discuss the phenomenal contribution which family business makes.
“Together in the UK, family businesses employ nine and a half million people, and generate a quarter of GDP – but as a sector we don’t shout about our achievements enough. I’m delighted that the Business Secretary joined us today and we look forward to working with him to ensure that family businesses can continue to thrive for generations to come, as an essential part of a balanced and growing economy.”
