The new Government is committed to greater financial transparency in government both nationally and locally. The Coalition Government believes by doing this, government will become far more efficient and careful about its expenditure.

Nationally, the Coalition Government has already released huge amounts of previously confidential financial information.

John Stevenson MP for Carlisle has called for similar transparency at the local level.  He said “Money spent by local authorities is tax payers’ money. It is extremely important that the money is spent properly and as effectively as possible. By disclosing detailed budgets, councils will be far more aware of public scrutiny and will make every effort to ensure there is less money wasted and less unnecessary expenditure. I believe this will result in our taxes being spent more effectively and more wisely.”

Other councils have already embraced this spending transparency. Windsor and Maidenhead council have already done it and Hammersmith and Fulham are the latest council to embrace this new openness.

John will be taking up the issue with the leaders of both Carlisle City Council and Carlisle County Council.
