The House of Commons has just agreed to allow the UK Youth Parliament to hold a debate in the Chamber. This is very unusual but such a debate was permitted in the last Parliament.
John Stevenson, MP for Carlisle, believes that it is extremely important to make politics and Parliament relevant to the next generation.
He said: “I fully support the idea. It is in all of our interests to encourage the next generation to take an active interest in politics. Giving the UK Youth Parliament the opportunity to actually debate in the chamber of the House of Commons will raise their profile and give the members a unique experience.”
Carlisle City Council do something similar with “Young Mayor” activities which they hold every year.
John hopes to visit a number of the secondary schools in September to give the students an opportunity to question him over his role as an MP.
John said: “The fact that the UK Youth Parliament is holding a debate in the Chamber of the House of Commons is great publicity. It does however fall on every MP and indeed councillor and council to make politics accessible and relevant. Carlisle City Council does a good job already and I hope to add something by taking the opportunity to visit the schools.”
