John Stevenson has just delivered the first maiden speech to be given by a Conservative Member of Parliament for Carlisle since 1959.
Traditionally, a maiden speech is not interrupted and is not controversial.
John Stevenson paid tribute to his predecessor Eric Martlew particularly on his contribution to the West Coast Railway line and the flood defences in Carlisle.
He also highlighted Carlisle’s rich heritage, the strong manufacturing base and the strong sense of identity which people in his constituency have.
John said “Carlisle is a wonderful place to live and work in. I wanted everyone to know about the rich heritage we have, the strong manufacturing base and most importantly of all the very welcoming people who live and work in Carlisle”.
John also called on the government to consider relocating a government department to Carlisle believing that there are benefits both to the national finances and to strengthening the Carlisle economy. This is a theme that John has commented on before.
John ended by giving the treasury team a bit of advice, suggesting if they were to follow the city of Carlisle’s motto they would not go far wrong – “Be just and fear not”.
- The full speech is available on Hansard, titled: Capital Gains Tax (Rates) of 23rd June 2010
