John was born in Aberdeen and educated at Aberdeen Grammar School before going to Dundee University, where he studied History and Politics. John attained an Honours Degree, before attending Chester Law College where he completed his legal training. He then went to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where he trained with the law firm Dickinson Dees before moving to Carlisle in 1992. John joined the firm of Bendles Solicitors a long established practice in Carlisle and became a partner in 1994.
John has also been very active in the local Conservative Party having been Chairman of both the Carlisle and the Penrith and The Border Associations. He was elected as a City Councillor for the ward of Stanwix in 1999 and served on a number of committees on Carlisle City Council.
John’s main interests have been sport and travel. He travelled extensively throughout Asia and the Far East and also had a 3 months spell in Israel where he worked in a Kibbutz and travelled around Egypt and the Mediterranean countries.
He is a keen sportsman- a participant as well as a spectator. His interests have included tennis and golf, but more recently he has been a keen runner completing numerous half marathons, as well as the New York and London marathon. His latest ambition and challenge is to cycle from the constituency to Westminster this Autumn.
